The idea of the project started from my experience teaching my mother tongue, Spanish, in English, to students who mainly speak Cantonese. This was the starting point which made me think about how individuals adjust when faced with cultural differences and interactions in addition to the inevitable miscommunications that accompany multicultural exchanges. Therefore I have a particular interest in creating visual artworks that explore these ideas. / La idea del proyecto comenzó desde mi experiencia de enseñar mi lengua nativa, español, en ingles, a estudiantes que mayormente hablan cantones. De ahí en adelante me cuestione como los individuos se ajustan cuando se enfrentan a diferencias culturales e interacciones, sumando claro los inevitables malentendidos que acompañan los intercambios culturales. Además, claro de tener un particular interés en crear trabajos visuales que exploren estas ideas
I decided to put these ideas into practice by remaking a common tool which is used in every language class: the dictionary. This instrument traditionally is created by linguists who collect the meanings and usage of new words, defining them in the different cultural contexts of the language. My dictionary alleges that official dictionaries set up an opposition between common social definitions and personal understandings. / Decidí poner estas ideas en práctica destacando una herramienta común usada en cada clase de lenguaje: el diccionario. Este instrumento tradicionalmente es creado por lingüistas quienes recogen el significado y el uso de las palabras nuevas, definiéndolas en diferentes contextos del lenguaje. Mi diccionario afirma lo que los diccionarios oficiales establecen como una oposición entre comunes definiciones sociales y apreciaciones personales.
The dictionary is a book with alphabetically listed words in a specific language, with definitions, etymologies, pronunciations, equivalents in other language and other information. There are many different types of dictionaries, including bilingual, multilingual, historical and special-purpose dictionaries. All of them have two philosophies to define words: prescriptive or descriptive. Prescription can refer both to the codification and the enforcement of rules governing how a language is to be used. Description is the work of analyzing and describing how language is spoken (or how it was spoken in the past) by a group of people in a speech community./ El diccionario es un libro con listados de palabras ordenadas alfabéticamente en un lenguaje especifico, con definiciones, etimologías, pronunciaciones, equivalentes en otras lenguas y otras informaciones. Hay muchos tipos de diccionarios, incluyendo bilingües, multilingües, históricos y con propósitos específicos. Todos tienen dos tipos de filosofías para definir las palabras: prescriptiva o descriptiva. La prescripción puede ser entendida tanto como la codificación y ejecución de las reglas que gobiernan el uso del lenguaje. La descripción es el trabajo de analizar y describir como el leguaje es hablado (o como fue hablado en el pasado) por un grupo de personas en el habla de la comunidad.
In researching this project I looked at artists such as Gillian Wearing, David Salle, Ken Aptekar and Duane Michals who explored how language in culture functions as a tool of authority and power. Postmodern and Post-Structuralist theorists (especially Michel Foucault) noted that controlling whatever is put into words and who has the authority to define them has the power. / Investigando para este proyecto mire artistas como Gillian Wearing, David Salle, Ken Aptekar y Duane Michals quienes exploran como el lenguaje funciona en las culturas como herramienta de autoridad y poder. Teóricos posmodernos y posestructuralistas (especialmente Michel Foucault) advirtieron que controlando todo lo que es puesto en palabras y quien tiene la autoridad de definirlas tiene el poder.
Therefore, I decided to use my drawings in this project establishing a direct connection between them and the text. Since our childhood we are taught to consider words and images together when we learn a new language. This interrelationship of text and image informs our basic interpretation and understanding of things and influences ways of seeing them. / Por consiguiente, decidí usar mis dibujos en este proyecto estableciendo una directa conexión entre ellos y el texto. Desde la niñez somos educados en considerar palabras e imágenes juntas cuando aprendemos un lenguaje nuevo. Esta relación de texto e imagen nos alerta nuestra interpretación básica y entendimiento de las cosas además de influenciar la manera de verlas.
This premise was the starting point of the project but, this project does not claim to attach a specific set of interpretations to each image, (as would be found in a dictionary). Using ideas of interpretation and misinterpretation found in my language teaching experience I create images that are open and encourage layered readings. It depends on who is interpreting it, and how, when and where the interpretation occurs. / Esta premisa fue el punto de partida de este proyecto pero, este proyecto no reclama adjuntar una interpretación especifica a cada imagen, (como es encontrada en un diccionario). Usando ideas de interpretación y equívocos encontrados en mi experiencia enseñando compongo imágenes abiertas e impulso a diferentes lecturas. Dependiendo claro quien, como, cuando y donde la interpretación ocurre.
The process of gathering information for the dictionary consisted of emailing people both locally and overseas from different cultural backgrounds and asking them to provide definitions, interpretations and the possible reinterpretations of words./ El proceso de recolección para el diccionario consiste en el envió de correos electrónicos a gente de diferentes entornos culturales tanto local como extranjera, pidiéndoles que me provean definiciones, interpretaciones y posibles reinterpretaciones de palabras.
At the beginning of the project, I asked a group of friends and colleagues, to collaborate in the project by sending personally defined words which I re-interpreted into drawings./ En el comienzo del proyecto, pregunte a un grupo de amigos y colegas, que colaboren en el proyecto enviándome definiciones personales de palabras las cuales reinterprete en dibujos.
The drawings which I made are my own interpretation of the words and definitions that people stent to me. I did them from other drawings that I found in children’s books, such as classical tales or coloring books which are easy for most adults to relate to because they are images from their childhood./ Los dibujos son mi propia interpretación de las palabras y las definiciones que la gente me envía. Los he hecho a partir de otros dibujos que encuentro en libros para niños, tales como cuentos clásicos o libros para colorear los cuales son fácilmente reconocibles por la mayoría de los adultos porque son imágenes de sus niñeces.
Any art work is subject to the personal interpretations of the artist, along with the multiple interpretations that the public find in it. Then this collaborative project, the writer (the person who define the word), the artist (me) and the public (the viewer), all become authors in the process of defining language. The intention is to provoke people to rethink the role or value that we give to our education. / Cualquier obra de arte está sujeta a la interpretación personal del artista, junto con las múltiples interpretaciones que el publico encuentra. En este proyecto de colaboración, el escritor (la persona que define la palabra), el artista (yo) y el publico (el espectador), todos se convierten en autores en el proceso de definir un lenguaje. La intención es provocar a la gente en repensar el rol o valor que damos a nuestra educación.
